Article Info ABSTRACT Article history: Received Oct 17, 2016 Revised Dec 4, 2016 Accepted Feb 2, 2017 Nondestructive assessment of cracks in metallic parts has always been a topic of industrial interest. In the past, different approaches have been proposed to assess such cracks. Recently, semi-orthogonal compactly supported spline wavelets were utilized to efficiently identify the 3D spatial location of cracks in conducting slabs of finite thicknesses. Within this proposed approach a horizontally oriented field sensor is employed on top of a magnetic slab subject to uniform horizontal magnetic field. In this paper the 3D spatial identification of cracks in conducting slabs is carried out through the Fourier transform by de-convoluting sensor response. In comparison to the previously adopted approach, the approach proposed in this paper is capable of identifying cracks that span over a relatively larger distance. Details of the crack detection methodology and simulations are given in the paper.

Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Functionally Graded Materials Using Enriched Finite Elements
Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques
Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...

This paper describes the application of three straightforward image-based filtering methods to remove the geological noise effect which masks unexploded ordnances (UXOs) magnetic signals in geophysical surveys. Three image filters comprising of mean, median and Wiener are used to enhance the location of probable UXOs when they are embedded in a dominant background geological noise. The study ar...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Thermal Shock Problem in Magneto-Thermoelastic Orthotropic Medium
The paper is concerned with the study of magneto-thermoelastic interactions in three dimensional thermoelastic medium under the purview of three-phase-lag model of generalized thermoelasticity. The medium under consideration is assumed to be homogeneous orthotropic medium. The fundamental equations of the three-dimensional problem of generalized thermoelasticity are obtained as a vector-matrix ...
متن کاملEstimation of Evolution of Relative Humidity Distribution for Concrete Slabs
Realistic prediction of concrete shrinkage and creep requires the calculation of the distributions of relative humidity at various times. Although the distributions of the relative humidity can be computed by numerical methods from the differential equation for diffusion, simple prediction formulas can facilitate structural analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present a simple formula for ...
